The streets of Francistown came alive recently as thousands of runners took part in the 2nd Edition of the Police Commissioner’s Run, held under the theme “Run for a Safer Botswana.”
More than just a fitness event, the run served as a powerful platform for community engagement and social awareness. It aimed to mobilise youth and other community members towards alcohol and drug-free recreation, raise awareness about gender-based violence (GBV), strengthen road safety practices, and promote stronger ties between the police and the public.
The President of the Republic of Botswana, Advocate Duma Gideon Boko, led the race as the Chief Runner, joined by Commissioner of Police Dinah Marathe and other senior government officials. Participants took part in three race categories, 5 km, 10 km, and 21 km, attracting both seasoned athletes and first-time runners.
Through meaningful interaction with participants, particularly the youth, the Botswana Police Service used the event to:
- Increase awareness of crime, especially drug-related and violent offences
- Educate the public on community-based crime reduction strategies
- Showcase that young people can have fun in a drug-free environment
- Promote healthy lifestyle choices through physical fitness
Commissioner Marathe commended the overwhelming turnout, noting that the event highlights the importance of unity and shared responsibility in creating a safer nation.
“The Police Commissioner’s Run is not only about fitness, it’s about building a community that values safety, health, and positive engagement,” she said.
