Police Warn The Public Against Fraudsters

Botswana Police Service (BPS) warns members of the public about criminals who continue to swindle unsuspecting individuals of large sums of money through various scams.

Recently, BPS is observing a new trend in which scammers send fraudulent text messages to victims, claiming that their bank accounts were on hold due to an outdated Bank App.  The victims are then provided with a link to update their banking details where upon they unsuspectingly disclose their personal banking information, which is then used by fraudsters to make unauthorised transactions.

In one of the incidents that occurred last week Tuesday (25/03/2025), a 54-year-old man in Maun was defrauded of over P200,000.00 through the scam. In another similar incident in Letlhakane, a 46-year-old woman lost close to P160,000.00. Police investigations are ongoing.

In light of these incidents, BPS urges the public to;

  • Refrain from sharing personal banking details with anyone
  • Avoid clicking on suspicious links sent via text messages or emails
  • Verify directly with their banks before making any banking dealings
  • Report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or their bank immediately
